Urban Administration

  • Urban areas like towns and cities are managed by local bodies such as Municipal Corporations and Municipalities.
  • These bodies ensure services like water supply, garbage collection, street lighting, etc.

Life in the City

  • City life depends on many services:
    • Clean roads and garbage collection
    • Safe drinking water
    • Electricity and streetlights
    • Parks and public toilets
  • These services are managed by the Municipal Corporation.

Who Cleans the City?

  • Sanitation workers or municipal workers clean the streets and collect garbage.
  • They are appointed by the Municipal Corporation.

The Municipal Corporation

  • Responsible for managing city services.
  • Divided into wards (small areas of the city).
  • Each ward elects a Ward Councillor.
  • The Mayor is the head of the Municipal Corporation.

Municipal Corporation duties include

  • Maintaining roads and parks
  • Providing water supply and sewage services
  • Managing garbage disposal
  • Keeping birth and death records

Ward Councillors and Committees

  • People elect Ward Councillors who take up local issues.
  • Councillors form committees to solve problems (e.g., water shortage, sanitation).
  • Work with engineers, workers, and officers to implement decisions.

From Where Does the Corporation Get Money?

Sources of income
  • Taxes on property, water, markets, and advertisements
  • Charges for services like water and garbage
  • Funds from state and central governments

 Different Names in Different Places

  • Large cities: Municipal Corporation
  • Smaller towns: Municipal Council (Municipality)
  • Very small towns: Nagar Panchayat
