Rural Administration

      • Rural administration deals with law and order, land records, and conflict resolution in villages.
      • Many officials work to ensure smooth functioning in rural areas.

Role of the Police

      • Maintains law and order in the area.
      • Investigates crimes like:
        • Theft
        • Fights
        • Property disputes
      • Helps in maintaining peace.
      • People can file a First Information Report (FIR) to report a crime.

Police Station

      • Each village falls under a specific police station.
      • The station covers several villages.

Maintenance of Land Records

      • The Patwari is responsible for maintenance of land records in the village.
      • Has different names in different states (e.g., Lekhpal, Kanungo, Karamchari, Village Officer).

 Role of the Patwari

      • Keeps and updates land records.
      • Measures land and maintains maps.
      • Collects land revenue.

Role of the Tehsildar (or Revenue Officer)

      • All States in India is divided into district
      • District is subdivided into tehsil, taluka, etc,
      • At the head is the District Collector and under her are the revenue officers, also known as tehsildar
      • Supervises Patwaris.
      • Ensures:
        • Proper collection of land taxes
        • Resolving land disputes
        • Helping people get certified copies of land records
        • Ensuring land records are available for public inspection

 Need for Fair Land Records

      • Helps prevent and solve disputes.
      • Ensures farmers get loans using land as security.
      • Useful for legal and personal purposes.

Hindu Succession Amendment Act, 2005

      • In the new law sons, daughters and their mothers can get an equal share in their land.
      • The same law will apply to states and union territories of the country.

Importance of Rural Administration

      • Ensures justice and equality for rural citizens.
      • Helps in solving disputes peacefully.
      • Supports farmers and landowners with proper documentation.
